That afternoon I forgot to turn off the water main
Was swapping out an old bathroom faucet in my 1920s house over in Portland. Got the supply lines disconnected and everything looked fine. Then I leaned into the vanity to wiggle the old faucet out and my knee hit the shutoff valve under the sink. Snapped it clean off. Water shot straight up, hit the ceiling, soaked the drywall in about 10 seconds. Ran downstairs and spun the main valve so hard I nearly broke my wrist. Took me two hours and a trip to the hardware store to replace that valve and patch the ceiling. Anybody else had a simple job turn into a flood real quick?

Did you have to replace the drywall or just patch it?

Patched it this time, but I've noticed it's always better to plan for a bigger repair than you think you need. These types of fixes almost always hide something worse once you start digging into it.
