That time my friend's dad showed me his $30 paint sprayer setup

I was helping my buddy Mike tape off his garage last Saturday and his dad comes out with this beat up Wagner sprayer he got on clearance. He sprayed the whole two-car garage in maybe 20 minutes and it looked better than any roller job I've ever done. Has anyone else had good luck with those cheap sprayers or did I just see a fluke?

Honestly I read somewhere that those cheap sprayers work fine as long as you thin your paint right and clean them immediately after. Probably not a fluke, just a guy who knew what he was doing.

Did he mention what kind of paint he was using, or was it just "thinned until it looked right"? I'm always curious if people measure or just eyeball it and hope for the best. Because that's usually where I mess up.
