Tried to fix a leaky shower valve and it took me 7 hours

Started at 9am thinking I'd swap out an old Moen cartridge in like an hour. Had to cut the drywall behind the shower because the retaining clip was seized solid. Then the new cartridge didn't seat right and I had water spraying everywhere. Found out the hard way that my shutoff valves were old gate valves that wouldn't close all the way. Took three trips to Ace Hardware before I got the right part and a pair of channel locks that actually fit. Has anyone else dealt with a shower valve job that just snowballed into a full day thing?
