Used to patch drywall with my dad's old putty knife, now I spring for the good stuff
For years I was that guy using a rusty 3-inch putty knife my dad left in the garage back in '92. Every patch job took like five coats and still looked like a mess. Last month I dropped $18 on a proper 6-inch drywall knife from the hardware store. One coat smooths out clean, no dragging or leaving gouges. Anyone else hold onto crap tools way too long before upgrading?

...and then I held onto a bent framing hammer for like six years. Every nail I'd swing at would go crooked and I'd just swear under my breath thinking it was my aim getting worse. Finally my buddy comes over to help me hang some shelves, grabs my hammer, and goes "uh, this head is literally tilted at a 15 degree angle." I was so used to compensating I didn't even notice. Straight hammer changed my life. Now I look at that rusty putty knife story and feel personally attacked.
