Got schooled on deck joist spacing at the hardware store in Bend

I was buying lumber for my backyard deck and the guy behind the counter, Mike, saw my plan for 24-inch spacing and flat out told me I'd have a bouncy mess in a year. He drew on a scrap of plywood to show me why 16 inches is the real deal for our snow load. Has anyone else had a plan totally changed by a random expert at the store?
