I finally measured my studs before hanging shelves

Been putting up shelves in my garage for years. Just assumed studs were 16 inches apart. Checked with a finder last Saturday and they were 19 inches on one wall. Anyone else had weird spacing mess up your projects?

Wait, your studs were 19 inches apart? That happened to me in a 1950s house I had, drove me crazy trying to hang heavy shelves. I ended up having to use toggle bolts on half the mounts since nothing lined up right.

You really trust a stud finder over just measuring from a corner? Those things are notorious for giving false readings, especially on old plaster or double drywall. People act like they're magic but they're just guessing at density changes. I've never found a house where the studs weren't exactly 16 on center if you just pull a baseboard and find the first one right. Maybe your wall had some shimming or furring strips messing with the sensor, not really a spacing issue at all.
