My neighbor roasted my deck staining job and honestly he was right

Dude came over while I was brushing on some Behr and just said "you're gonna hate yourself in 2 years." I was like whatever old man. He told me I was putting it on way too thick and not back brushing. Sure enough by last spring half of it was peeling. I sanded everything down and did it his way with thin coats and a lot of elbow grease. Been 8 months now and it actually looks way better. Anyone else get told they were doing something the hard way by an old homeowner?

Argue the opposite. Behr is borderline trash anyway. Thick coats hold up better in my experience because thin ones wash out too fast. Back brushing is for people who don't know how to lay down a proper wet edge. Eight months is nothing brother. Come talk to me when you're three years in and that thin coat is dust. Sanding everything is admission that you already wasted your time.

Thin coats wash out too fast" - says the guy who clearly never watched me try to roll paint. I'm pretty sure MY thin coats wash out because I panic and re-roll the same spot 47 times. Eight months is a solid run for anything I touch, honestly.
