My paint roller exploded in the middle of my living room ceiling job

I was painting my hallway ceiling on a Saturday, nothing crazy. Using a cheap 9 inch roller I got from a hardware store across from my place in Portland. About 20 minutes in, the roller cover just flew off. Like completely detached. Paint went everywhere. On the floor, on my couch, in my hair. I stood there holding the bare handle with orange paint dripping down my arm. My roommate walked in and just said "you look like a Jackson Pollock piece." Now I check every roller cover before I start by giving it a good tug. Has anyone else had a tool just fall apart mid project like that?

Same thing happened to me with a cheap pole sander. The handle just snapped clean off halfway through sanding drywall. Blue dust everywhere, looked like I got attacked by a Smurf. Now I give everything a good twist before I trust it.

Did you try twisting the roller cage before you started? I always spin mine a few times now to check if it's loose after getting baptized in ceiling paint once.
