Overheard a contractor say 'stop chasing level' and it clicked for my tile job

I was at a supply shop buying thin-set and this old tile guy told someone that chasing perfectly level floors with self-leveler is a trap, you should just focus on making things flat instead. It made me realize I spent 6 hours and $80 on leveling compound for a bathroom floor that only had a 1/8 inch dip in one corner. Have any of you run into a situation where trying to make something perfect actually made it worse?

My uncle spent an entire weekend leveling a closet floor nobody ever walks in.

Hate to be that guy, but flat and level aren't quite the same thing. Flat means no bumps or dips across the floor, which is what tile actually needs to not crack or rock. Level means it's perfectly horizontal to the ground. They're related but different problems, and chasing one when you need the other is where most folks mess up.
