Overheard a guy at the hardware store say he spent $400 on a fancy stud finder and still missed joists
He told me he used it on three walls and hit nothing but air, then I showed him my $20 magnetic one and he just stood there quiet for a minute, anyone else still using the cheap stuff and getting better results?

Gotta jump in here - the magnetic ones don't just find studs, they find the screws or nails holding the drywall. So if the drywall was nailed or screwed into a stud, you're good. But if someone used glue or you're hitting a different spot between fasteners, the magnet won't catch anything, and that's why the expensive ones can actually work better sometimes. Still, $400 on a stud finder is wild when a halfway decent electronic one for $50 does the job fine for most people.

Wait are we sure that fancy one wasn't just defective? I had a buddy who bought a $300 walabot and it literally showed pipes every time he scanned a wall even when there was nothing there. Sometimes these expensive units get returned and put back on the shelf without being reset or checked lol. Your magnetic one works because it's literally just a magnet, no software updates or calibration to fail.
