Pro tip: I see a lot of folks skip the primer when painting kitchen cabinets

I just finished repainting my oak cabinets in the kitchen, and the difference is huge. I used a bonding primer first, let it dry for a full day, then did two coats of a semi-gloss enamel. The paint guy at the local store said skipping primer is the main reason paint peels or chips in a year. Has anyone else found a primer that works really well for greasy spots?

My uncle painted his garage cabinets ten years ago with just some leftover wall paint, no primer, and they still look fine. I get that a kitchen gets more grease, but a full day of drying for primer seems like overkill. Sometimes I wonder if the paint stores just push extra products to make a bigger sale.

Honestly, that bonding primer is a game changer. I tried skipping it once on a bathroom vanity and the paint just slid right off after a few months.

What about old nicotine stains from a previous owner?
