Spent 6 hours patching drywall because I skipped the mesh tape

Thought I could just slap some joint compound over a crack in my hallway. Now I'm on coat number four and it still looks terrible. Anyone else learn this the hard way?

Three coats in and I was still seeing that crack clear as day. Mesh tape is worth the extra dollar, isn't it?

Tbh have you tried using a setting-type joint compound for the first coat? That stuff bonds way better and fills cracks without needing five layers.
