Took me 3 years to realize my stud finder was useless in plaster walls

I kept hanging shelves and pictures and they'd pull out after a few months because I trusted a magnetic stud finder on my 1920s plaster. My neighbor watched me patch a giant hole and said, 'you know rare earth magnets work better, right?' Switched to a $12 magnet on a string and now I locate the lath every time, anyone else dealing with old plaster and stud finder tricks?
