Tried a weird trick with a putty knife to fix a gouge in my oak floor

I had a deep scratch from moving a fridge in my kitchen in Toledo, and instead of sanding the whole board, I filled it with a mix of wood glue and sawdust from a test cut, then used a heated putty knife to smooth it level. It dried rock hard and after a quick touch-up with a stain pen, you can't even tell it was there unless you get on your hands and knees. Has anyone else tried this heat trick with a metal putty knife for wood repairs?

Read about heating the knife to stop the filler from sticking.

Heating the knife? I used to think that was dumb but it works.

I called it a gimmick until I melted my third putty knife.
