Tried to fix my own drywall patch and ended up with a crater in my living room wall

I was patching a hole from an old cable outlet in my Denver apartment, and I put way too much joint compound on without sanding between coats. The next morning it cracked and fell out in one big chunk, leaving a hole twice as big as the original. Anyone else ever made a simple repair way worse and had to call in a pro to fix it?
