Vent: My 'quick' bathroom tile job turned into a 3-day geometry puzzle

Tried to lay a herringbone pattern in my small bathroom in Mesa and the cuts around the toilet flange were a nightmare. What I thought was a Saturday project ended up taking until Tuesday evening because I kept messing up the angles. Anyone have a good trick for marking those weird shapes without wasting a ton of tile?

Cardboard templates saved my sanity last time.

What's the secret to not stabbing the cardboard in frustration? I tried it once and ended up with more template pieces than project pieces. It's a fine line between a helpful guide and a new puzzle to solve.

Ever try scoring the cardboard lightly with a dull pencil first? It gives your blade a tiny groove to follow so you're less likely to slip and shred it. I learned that the hard way after a few disasters, and it made all the difference for clean cuts. Lunam91 is totally right about templates saving sanity, but man, you gotta get the cutting part right. A thicker box from like a cereal pack is way easier to handle than flimsy stuff.
