A neighbor in my building said my compost bin smelled like a crime scene last summer, and now I freeze all my kitchen scraps before adding them.

Sounds like a solid plan. Freezing scraps is a smart way to avoid turning your balcony into a biohazard zone. Your neighbor probably misses the thrilling mystery though.

Did you see that article about how people in Japan sometimes use special garbage disposal bags that neutralize smells? I guess it's a whole thing over there since they have such strict recycling rules. Makes me wonder if we'll all eventually get into that kind of routine. Honestly I kind of get it though, especially if you're in an apartment with thin walls and your neighbor can smell everything you cook. My friend lives above a pizza place and she says the smell of pepperoni wakes her up sometimes, so I guess the mystery smell game goes both ways.

Oh man, that's so true. It feels like we're all just trying to manage small, weird smells now. You see it everywhere. People buying special litter for their cats, running the bathroom fan for ten extra minutes, or freezing food scraps like you said. We're all just little smell managers in our own tiny boxes, trying not to offend the other boxes. It's a whole hidden layer of modern life.
