Appreciation post: The lady at the hardware store who stopped me from buying the wrong pipe fitting
Last Saturday I was at the Ace Hardware in Lubbock trying to fix a leak under my kitchen sink. I grabbed what I thought was a 3/4 inch brass coupling and was heading to checkout. This older employee named Carol came over and asked what I was working on. I told her and she just looked at the fitting in my hand and said "honey that's for gas lines, not water. You'll be mopping up a flood by dinner." She walked me to the right aisle and even showed me how to use a pipe wrench without crushing the threads. Fixed the leak in 20 minutes after that. Has anyone else had a random employee save them from a huge mistake like that?

Had a buddy from work who decided he could install his own water heater last summer. He was down at the local hardware store loading up on PVC pipe and fittings and this old timer in the plumbing aisle just started laughing at him. Said PVC would melt if the heater kicked on and he'd end up with a basement full of hot water. Dude had to return half his cart and start over with copper and a torch. He still brings it up every time someone mentions a DIY project going sideways.
