Heard a guy at the coffee shop say climate change is why his tomatoes split

I was grabbing a latte this morning and this older dude was telling his friend that the weird rain patterns this summer made his tomato skins crack open. He said it happened after a dry spell then a sudden downpour, which apparently makes the fruit swell too fast. I never thought about how weather swings affect garden stuff like that. Anyone else notice their plants acting weird from the weather recently?

That whole "swelling too fast" thing is totally a real thing with tomatoes (and zucchini too actually). My mom's garden had the same problem after that heat wave we had last month - her beefsteak tomatoes looked like they had zippers down the sides from all the cracking. It's honestly kind of sad when you put all that work into watering and caring for plants, only for the weather to mess them up like that.
