My neighbor's 10 year old called out my recycling habit

I was sorting my cans last Tuesday and her kid asked why I rinse them out so careful. I told her it was so they don't smell and she goes, 'but my teacher said the truck just dumps them all together anyway.' I looked it up later and she's sort of right, single stream recycling means it all gets mixed at the plant. It made me wonder if I've been wasting half my time scrubbing jars for years. Does anyone else still do the full rinse routine or have you all just given up and toss stuff in dirty?
