My uncle insisted I use his old Craftsman torque wrench for my head gasket job

He said the digital ones are garbage and his 1976 beam style was more accurate than anything new. I snapped three bolts in a row trying to get to 30 ft-lbs before realizing the thing was way out of calibration. Does anyone else have a relative who swears by ancient tools that are clearly past their prime?

My dad gave me his old torque wrench from the 80s and I ended up snapping a bolt in half trying to hit 40 ft-lbs. Guess that's what I get for trusting something older than me haha.

Laughing with you @luna_craig58 cause I did the same thing with my grandpa's old tape measure last month. It's funny how we assume older tools were built better but they still wear out over time. I feel like this happens everywhere now, not just with tools. You trust an old recipe from a family cookbook and end up with burned cookies cause the oven temp was off. Or you hold onto a vintage jacket from a thrift store and the zipper jams on the first cold day. We want to believe the old stuff is magic but sometimes it's just rusty.
