Paid $120 for a 'pro' knife sharpening kit, my $6 whetstone works better

Bought one of those electric sharpening rigs with the angle guides and everything after the butcher shop guy raved about it. First two knives came out with nasty burrs, and the third one actually chipped the edge on my old chef's knife. Tried the same blades on a cheap whetstone I had sitting in the garage, 15 minutes of work and they were shaving sharp. Anyone else find that the fancy gadgets just make things worse than the basic tools?

Read somewhere that the fancy sharpening tools mostly just sell confidence to beginners. A flat stone and steady hands beat any motorized gadget I've seen in action.
