The old man at the garage said never trust a reused drain plug washer

My uncle's buddy, a retired mechanic from Toledo, told me to always replace the crush washer on my oil pan. I figured he was just being old school, so I reused the same one for two changes. About a month ago, I found a small oil puddle under my truck after a shift, and the plug was barely hand tight. The washer had flattened out and was letting oil seep past. Cost me $14 for a new washer and an hour of cleanup, and now I keep a pack of them in my toolbox. Anyone else have a small piece of advice they ignored and paid for later?
