Warning: a simple door hinge fix turned into a two day job for me

The top hinge on my back door was loose, so I figured I'd just tighten the screws. Easy, right? Well, the screw holes were totally stripped out, so I had to fill them with wood glue and toothpicks, let it dry, then drill new pilot holes. That whole process took about 28 hours with the drying time. Everyone online makes it sound like a 10 minute thing. Has anyone else had a tiny repair blow up into a multi-day project?

That "10 minute thing" idea is what gets you in trouble. Those online guides never show the stripped out holes or the rotten wood you find. A two day job sounds about right when you have to actually fix the problem right. What else were you supposed to do, just keep tightening screws into nothing?

Tell me about it, my bathroom doorknob fix turned into a full weekend. Had to replace the whole latch plate because the old one was bent, and of course nothing at the store matched the old screw holes. It's never just the one thing you see at first.

Right? It's always a domino effect. You start with a loose knob and end up learning way too much about door frame repair. Those old screw holes are the worst, you either have to fill them with toothpicks and glue or move the whole plate. Makes you respect the people who built these things to last.
