Warning: My coffee maker failed mid brew and it was a mess

Last Sunday my drip machine just stopped working halfway through the pot. Water dumped all over the counter and the heating element started smoking. I had to unplug it quick and clean up grounds from the floor. Has anyone else had a appliance die like that without warning?

Honestly sounds like you just got unlucky with a cheap machine. Drip coffee makers aren't exactly built to last these days. You can pick one up at Walmart for $20 so it's not the end of the world. The smoking part is a little dramatic though - probably just dust burning off the heating element. Plus if you kept it near the sink or something maybe water got into the electronics. Not saying it's your fault but these things happen with appliances now and then.
