Just realized I was overcomplicating my layer setup

Last Tuesday I spent 7 hours fighting a civil site plan because I kept stacking xrefs with frozen layers, keying everything off the base survey. My buddy from the shop next door came over for lunch and asked why I didn't just purge the old road centerline layer once I knew it was done. Tried it on a copy, took 20 minutes to finish what I'd been wrestling with all day. Now I do a layer cleanup pass before I even start adding utilities. Anybody else got a habit that makes their own drawings harder?
