My old drafting table finally gave up the ghost last night

I've been using this same old drafting table since 2003, got it from a retiring architect up in Portland. The main tilt mechanism just snapped clean off last night while I was trying to adjust the angle for a detail drawing. Had to prop it up with a stack of old blueprints just to finish my deadline. Has anyone else had luck fixing those old Alpia mechanisms or is it time to just bite the bullet and buy new?

Try swapping the busted part with a salvaged Alpia mechanism from an old drafting table on Craigslist, those things are built like tanks and easy to replace. If that fails, just grab a new table from an office surplus store instead of paying retail.

That line about swapping the busted part with a salvaged Alpia mechanism really hits home for me. I've noticed this pattern where people give up on stuff way too fast, like they think once something breaks it's trash. But honestly, most things have a critical weak point that can be replaced, just like that drafting table part. I've fixed three lamps in my house this year just by swapping a bad switch or socket. My toaster? Just a loose wire inside, took ten minutes to fix. It's like we forget that these things are built from smaller pieces, and you can often swap the one broken piece instead of the whole damn thing.
