Picked the cheap parallel rule over the fancy one, 3 months later no regrets
Honestly, I almost dropped $180 on a brand name drafting machine at the supply store in Tulsa. Instead I grabbed a $42 parallel rule from the clearance bin and mounted it on my board. It took me two evenings to get the cables tensioned right, but now I can crank out floor plan sketches without fighting a stiff arm. Has anyone else gone budget on a basic tool and found it works just as good for hand drafting?

Learned the hard way that expensive gear don't make the lines any straighter. My first parallel rule was a $15 garage sale find with a bent edge, and I spent a whole weekend shimming it with tape before I figured out it was just plain warped. Tensioning those cables is honestly half the battle with the cheap ones, so nice work sticking with it for two evenings instead of rage quitting like I did. A floor plan is a floor plan whether the tool cost $42 or $180, and your wallet is $138 happier.
