That offhand remark about layer counts flipped how I draft

Had a chat with a structural engineer at lunch last Tuesday, he mentioned he only uses 3 layers for everything, even complex steel frames. Been running 12 to 15 layers for 8 years now, thought it was being thorough. He said, and I quote, 'if the drafter needs 15 layers, the drawing is doing the thinking for them.' That one stuck. Once I stripped it down, my files got smaller, my revisions got faster, and I stopped losing linework in the noise. It hit different because it wasn't advice, it was just him stating a fact like it was obvious. Anyone else run a lean setup or is everybody else still hoarding layers?
