The tape measure trick my foreman showed me in Des Moines

I kept fighting with the same 3 inches of framing error for two weeks until he pointed out I was reading from the wrong side of the hook, never even crossed my mind to account for the metal thickness. Once I started pulling the hook tight against the edge instead of pushing it, every cut lined up first try on the next job. Has anyone else had a simple habit like that completely messing up their layouts without realizing it?
