TIL a drafting shop in Phoenix changed my mind about pencil grades
I used to think you only needed 2H and 2B pencils for drafting, nothing else. Then last month I stopped by a small supply shop in Phoenix called Drafting Depot (just stumbled on it). The old guy running the place handed me a 4H and a 6B and told me to try them on a test sheet. The 4H made my line work way cleaner for thin details, and the 6B gave me shading that actually looked solid on my building sections. I was wrong for years about just using two grades. Has anyone else found a specific pencil grade that changed their whole workflow?

Totally agree with you on the "pencil wizard" thing. That old guy absolutely gave me a little lecture before handing them over, like I was missing out on some ancient secret. I had the same shock with the 6B too - I was a 2B guy forever and the first time I used a 6B on a rough sketch, the darks looked almost wet compared to what I was used to. Now I keep a 4H and a 6B in my bag for everything, and I feel dumb for ignoring them all these years.

Wait, I have to ask - did the old guy just hand them to you without warning or did he lecture you first like some kind of pencil wizard? That sounds almost too good to be true, like a movie scene where the mentor reveals the secret tool. I've been using that exact 6B combo for my art since your post and it genuinely blew my mind how much deeper the blacks go compared to a standard 2B.
