TIL my $300 drafting table lamp was a huge waste
I bought a fancy LED lamp with a magnifier for my home drafting setup, thinking it would help with fine detail work. It just made everything look flat and washed out the pencil lines, so I went back to my old desk lamp after a week. What's a good light source for seeing subtle graphite shading on vellum?

I read an article about museum lighting for pencil drawings. They often use a single, strong incandescent bulb placed at a sharp side angle, like 45 degrees, to create shadows that show the texture of the graphite. The warm color temperature helps too, unlike harsh white LEDs.

Wait, they still use incandescent bulbs? I thought museums switched everything to LEDs years ago for safety. That's wild.

Right there with you sage212, that seems like a weird choice at first. The explanation about needing that specific light to see pencil marks makes total sense though. It's one of those things you don't think about until someone points it out. Guess some old tech just works better for the job, even if it seems outdated.
