A dredge superintendent's comment on my slurry mix changed my whole summer

Ran a job on the Meramec River last July and kept getting flak for slow progress. A superintendent said my slurry was too thin, dumping extra water just to keep it moving. I fought it for two weeks, thinking thicker would clog the line. Finally tried his way, cut water at the pump and ran 12% more yardage per day. Anyone else had a boss whose offhand advice on viscosity actually saved their season?
