Always thought you had to run the cutterhead at full RPM in thick clay

We were working the old channel near Mobile and the clay was like concrete. My boss, Frank, told me to drop the RPMs from 28 down to 18 and just let the pump do more work. I thought we'd stall out, but we actually moved more material in an hour with less wear on the teeth. Anyone else tried slowing down in heavy stuff?

Ever notice how forcing things usually makes it worse? Like pushing too hard on a stuck door. Maybe the trick is just working with the material instead of against it.

My old Honda needed a good shove to get into second gear.
