Appreciation post: Picked a Level 5 finish over orange peel and it was the right call
Was bidding a small office remodel downtown and the client couldn't decide between a smooth Level 5 finish or just doing orange peel texture to save money. I talked them into the Level 5 because the lighting in that room has big windows on one side and harsh LEDs on the other. Total pain to sand all the joints perfectly and skim coat the whole thing, but when the painters rolled on the final coat, that wall looked like glass. No shadows, no ridges. Client walked in and just said "wow." Worth the extra two days of labor. Has anyone else had a job where the smooth finish made or broke the whole look?

Man Level 5 is the only way to go when side lighting hits the wall like that!

Does the extra cost for Level 5 bother anyone else or is it just me? The finish is super smooth with no trowel marks showing through. But for most rooms with normal light, a good Level 4 seems to do the trick just fine.
