Blew through 3 boxes of mesh tape before realizing it had a right side up

So I'm taping this basement ceiling in Wichita last Wednesday, right? I've been hanging and taping for about 7 years now. I grab a fresh roll of mesh tape, start pressing it into the mud, and the stuff keeps curling on me. Corners look like garbage, edges peeling up no matter how much I burn it down. I curse the brand, cuss the drywall, cuss the homeowner's dog for barking at me. After like the third roll, I finally flip the tape over and it lays flat as a pancake. Turns out one side has a slight texture that grabs better. I never knew that. Was it just me this whole time? Anyone else had a product that secretly had a directional side nobody mentions in the training videos?
