Debate: Should we pre-fill tapered joints before knocking down? I tried skipping that step on a big house in Austin and it backfired.

I always pre-fill deep tapered joints before taping, but on a 12-room spec house I decided to save time and just mud over them. Figured the taper wasn't that bad, but the tape bubbled up in three spots and I had to cut and patch. Has anyone else found a way to skip pre-fill without issues, or is it always a risk?

I did the same thing two years ago on a house in San Antonio. Had 14 foot ceilings and thought I was being clever by skipping the pre-fill. Ended up spending more time fixing those bubbles than I would have just doing it right the first time. It reminds me of how people shortcut the seasoning on a new cast iron skillet and then wonder why their eggs stick. In both cases you are just borrowing time from your future self at a high interest rate. Pre-filling is one of those steps that looks small but saves you a whole lot of headache later on.

That cast iron skillet comparison is spot on, @riverm48. Borrowing time from your future self at a high interest rate is exactly what it is. I tried skipping pre-fill on a popcorn ceiling once and spent the next two weekends scraping off dried mud and repatching. The short cut felt like a victory until the bubbles showed up and laughed at me. Saving ten minutes costs you ten hours every single time. People always want the easy way until the hard way shows up and demands payment with interest.
