Had a tape joint split wide open on a job in Tempe last Thursday
It was a 12-foot ceiling seam I'd just finished, and the whole thing cracked right down the middle as it was drying. I used All-Purpose mud, but I think the AC in the house was cranked way too high and it dried way too fast. What's the best way to fix a split like that without having to re-tape the whole run?

Cranked AC will do that every time, I've seen it split a whole wall of fresh mud.

My uncle's house had a crack like that from a bad drywall job. It opened up every winter when the heat kicked on. Just kept getting wider until they had to redo the whole section.
