Hot take: Green board vs purple board difference is real after 5 years
I did a full bathroom remodel in my own house back in 2019, used purple board in the wet areas and green board in the rest. Five years later, the purple board looks brand new but the green board has some soft spots near the floor. Is it just me or is purple board way more moisture resistant for the extra cost?

Yeah the difference is real no doubt. I put purple board in my own bathroom around the shower and used regular green board for the rest and after 6 years the green board started getting a little spongy near the baseboard where water would splash. Had to rip out a section and replace it with purple board and now that spot is solid as a rock. The purple board has that fiberglass mesh in it that just doesn't soak up moisture like the paper faced green board does. For the small price difference it's totally worth using purple board everywhere in a bathroom, especially near the floor where water always hits.

Learned this lesson the hard way myself with a few things around the house. Seems like the cheap option always costs you more in the long run, whether it's drywall or a toaster or whatever.
