Saw a crew in my town not back blocking a long seam on a vaulted ceiling
I watched them tape it up and it looked fine, but I know that joint will crack in a year. The mud just can't handle the flex across that span without support. What's the longest span you guys will run before you always add that extra support?

That 12-foot rule is more about flat ceilings than vaulted ones.

Vaulted ceilings throw everything off because the eye follows the slope differently. The proportions just don't work the same way when you're dealing with that angled geometry instead of a flat plane overhead.

Oh man, that totally reminds me of my buddy who tried to hang a giant light fixture in his vaulted living room. He followed some online guide for a standard ceiling and the thing looked like a tiny speck from the floor. He had to take it all down and start over, it was a huge pain. Makes total sense that the math would be different for slanted ceilings. I bet a lot of people run into that same problem without even realizing it.
