Spent 7 years mudding with a 6 inch knife before a guy told me to try a 12 inch

I was at a job in Denver last fall, doing a basement finish. An older drywaller walked through and watched me for a minute. He said “you’re working way too hard with that little thing.” Handed me his 12 inch skimming blade. First pass felt weird, but by the third seam I was going twice as fast. Now I only use the 6 inch for screws and tight corners. Anyone else have a tool size change that clicked way later than it should have?

That 12 inch blade really is a game changer once you get the feel for it. Did you notice a difference in how much mud you had to mix up per batch with the bigger blade?

Man, that older drywaller sounds like he did you a solid. @jenny_sullivan97, you're spot on about the mud usage too. With the 6 inch I was constantly stopping to reload, but that 12 inch holds way more so you can just lay it down smooth and keep going. I remember mixing up a 5 gallon bucket and thinking "this used to last me all day" and then halfway through looking at it like "what have I gotten into." But it's totally worth it once you get the timing down.
