Talked to an old timer at the supply house last week about mud consistency

He said I was mixing my joint compound way too thick and showed me his trick of adding just a splash more water. Saved me so much sanding time on a ceiling job yesterday, has anyone else gotten a simple tip that changed their whole routine?

That mud bang tip is gold though, I've been doing it for years after some old timer showed me the same thing. The air pockets are the worst, makes your first few passes feel like you're dragging a rake through gravel. Another one I picked up was wetting your knife before you pull it across the corner, just a quick dip in the bucket water. Keeps the mud from sticking and dragging, gives you a way cleaner edge. It's crazy how these little things just save you so much frustration on the job.

Wetting the knife works great @robert_hayes, I dip mine in thinned mud now instead of water.

Old timers always have tricks like that... my grandpa taught me to tap the mud bucket with a hammer before opening it to break up the air pockets. Saves you from stirring forever trying to get that lumpy mess smooth. Little things like that just make the whole job go smoother.
