The client in Tempe who wanted a perfect finish but kept the AC off

Last Tuesday I was taping a bedroom in a house over there, and the homeowner asked for a level 5 finish. He also said he was saving money and turned the AC off while we worked. The mud dried so fast in that 95 degree heat it was cracking before I could even get a second coat on. I had to explain that the air needs to be right for the product to work right. Has anyone else had to talk a client out of making their own job harder?

That "saving money" line is a classic. See it all the time with DIY landlords. They'll skip on the prep or the right conditions to save fifty bucks, then pay triple to have it fixed later. It's not just drywall, it's how people approach any problem. They fight the process instead of working with it.

Honestly that "skip on the prep" thing is so real. My buddy tried to paint his whole apartment in one weekend to save on a hotel. He didn't tape anything or use drop cloths, just went for it. Spilled a whole tray of dark gray paint on the brand new carpet. The cleaning bill was more than a week at the hotel would have been. He fought the whole process and it cost him big time.
