TIL a cheap mud pan makes finishing way harder than it needs to be.

I bought a no-name pan from the discount bin and the edges were rough. It left streaks in every coat I put on. Spending a few extra bucks on a good pan changed my whole workflow for the better.

Actually, a lot of times it's about the technique, not the tool. I've used bargain pans for years and once you break them in, they work just FINE. The key is to sand down any rough edges yourself and keep the pan clean. Spending more money doesn't always fix the problem if your method is off.

Exactly. My cheap skillet from the hardware store is still going strong ten years later. The trick is taking steel wool to the cooking surface before the first use, then doing a few rounds of seasoning with corn oil. People blame the pan when they really just need to put in the elbow grease.
