A foreman told me my wire pulls were too fast and it was hurting the insulation
He pulled me aside on a big apartment job in Tempe and said, "Slow down, you're cooking the jacket." I was pulling 4/0 THHN through a 2-inch conduit and thought speed was key. Now I set a timer for five minutes per hundred feet and check the wire by hand for heat. How do you judge the right speed on a long pull?

Just keep a hand on the conduit to feel for warmth as you go.

Keep a hand on the conduit" is a good start, but what about pulls where you can't reach the whole run? Do you just rely on a helper down the line to yell if it gets warm?

A helper down the line is fine for short runs, but on longer pulls I've had guys use walkie talkies and just stay in constant communication about conduit temperature. Some of the older foremen I've worked with even marked a spot halfway with a temp gun and checked it after the pull started moving.
