After my block's power kept cutting out, I finally get why everyone insists on surge protectors

I thought they were just for computers, but seeing my neighbor's fridge get zapped opened my eyes.

Isn't a fridge already grounded through its plug? I just unplug big stuff if a bad storm is coming.

Look @adamstone, that ground wire only helps if your house wiring is perfect. A direct strike or nearby hit can jump right through it and fry everything plugged in, even if grounded. Honestly saw my neighbor lose a fridge, washer, and modem from one surge last year. The plug's ground isn't magic armor.

My surge protector once gave me a false sense of security, much like my hairline. Lost a console before I wised up and unplug everything now.
