Just realized my journeyman license number is shorter than the newer ones...

I was looking at my old license from 1998 and noticed it's only 6 digits, while a helper I'm training got his last year and it's 10 digits. Found out they added area codes and sequence numbers after the 2000s boom. Anyone know when they switched that up?

Yeah did you ever actually get a clear year from the board? I called mine years back about the same thing and they said the switch happened in phases between 2004 and 2008 depending on the trade. Pipefitters in my state got the longer numbers first because they were the biggest group, then electricians a year later. So if your helper got issued after 2006 chances are that 10 digit number is the standard now. Sounds like you got grandfathered in with the old system just like I did.

Best thing I did was just call the state licensing board directly and ask. They told me exactly when the system changed and even sent a PDF explaining the numbering history. Quick phone call saved me a lot of guesswork.
