My apprentice said something about wire nuts that actually made sense

He was pulling wire for a kitchen reno and said, 'Why do we use these red ones for everything when the blue ones are rated for more strands?' I checked the box and he was right, the specs are different. Am I the only one who's been on autopilot with this for a decade?

Red ones are cheaper and they've never failed me. Specs on a box don't always matter in the real world.

Yeah the "specs on a box don't always matter" line from averywright is true until it bites you. My buddy had a call back for flickering lights in a garage workshop, turned out he used red nuts on some 12-gauge with a bunch of strands. They just weren't biting right and one got warm enough to discolor. Swapped them for the blues and the problem went away. Sometimes the real world test is a failed connection and a ticked off customer.
