Old timer in Tulsa showed me a trick for pulling wire that stuck with me

Back in 2009, a retired electrician named Dale watched me fight a 200 foot pull through conduit for 20 minutes, then he tapped the conduit with his screwdriver and said, 'Listen for the echo, kid, that tells you where the hangup is.' He was gone before lunch but I still use that trick on every rough pull. Anyone else pick up weird habits from a guy who only worked half days?

That tap test is wild. It reminds me of this old plumber I knew who would smell the water coming out of a faucet before he touched a single pipe. Swore he could tell if it was a supply issue or a drain issue just by the mineral smell. He was usually right too, which drove me nuts. I still catch myself sniffing water at customers' houses sometimes, and they look at me like I'm crazy.
