Panel labels: sharpie and tape or label maker, which side are you on?

Last month I was on a service call in a strip mall in Columbus, the fire marshal wanted to know which breaker fed the emergency lights. The panel had handwritten labels from 1987, half of them faded to nothing. Took me 20 minutes to trace it with a ticker. I get why guys hand write them, stickies peel off and printers cost money, but the new pre-printed strips from an actual label maker are cheap and last forever. My apprentice argues writing in sharpie is faster and good enough if you cover it with clear tape. I say it's a safety thing, not a time thing. What do you guys do for a quick re-label when you're in a pinch, and has a bad label ever burned you on a job?

Buddy of mine spent an hour hunting a tripped breaker because someone sharpied over the old label twice, now he takes photos of every panel.
